Trail running

The Trail Running in Pico tour offers an unforgettable experience, where runners are guided through volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and historical paths. This route provides a deep connection to the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Thanks to Pico’s rugged terrain and unique geography, it is considered one of the most stunning locations in the Azores for trail running.

Exploring Pico’s Volcanic Landscape

The adventure begins in the heart of Pico’s central plateau. A 3-kilometer warm-up run along a scenic road is followed by the Caminho dos Burros trail. This ancient path, built by our ancestors, has been carefully preserved. It winds through the island’s stunning landscape, allowing you to experience the rugged beauty of Pico firsthand.

As you run, you will encounter historical lava flows, formed by the eruption of 1562/64. These flows, in particular, shaped the island’s current volcanic terrain and tell the story of Pico’s fiery past. Alongside the trail, native flora thrives, showcasing the island’s biodiversity. The volcanic cones, left behind by the eruption, also stand tall, offering a glimpse into the powerful forces that formed Pico.

A Refreshing End at Baía de Canas

The tour concludes at Baía de Canas, a picturesque bay with crystal-clear waters. If the conditions are right, you’ll have the opportunity to cool off with a refreshing swim. In addition, this peaceful bay provides the perfect setting to relax and unwind after your run. The Guide ensures that the pace is comfortable for all participants, so everyone can enjoy the adventure.

The Trail Running in Pico tour is a round trip, with all transportation between Faial Island and Pico Island included. Travel logistics are handled for you, making the experience seamless and stress-free.

Trail running

Trail running on Faial is a fun way to get to know the island. The 10 Volcanoes Trail is arguably the best medium distance trail running route on Faial and is actually part of the Azores Trail Run race. This trail offers an easy way to sight-see for those who carry their running shoes with them wherever they go. During the tour, we will have the chance to learn about the nature and culture of the island while we run. Our trail runner guide will set the right pace so everyone feels comfortable during the adventure. Depending on the weather, there will be some time to relax and possibly swim when we finish.

Although the 10 Volcanoes Trail is a great choice for trail running in Faial, we understand that it might be too challenging or just might not be what you’re looking for. Our tours are private, so please feel free to contact us if you’re looking for a shorter trail or a different running route. We are happy to design a different trail running option.
