Caldeira of Faial is a very particular volcanic colapse crater. The highest trail in the island is on the rim of the Caldeira, making it very exposed to the elements. Our guides will advise against doing it in a rainy or windy day. But in a clear day you can see virtually all around the island. The high altitude allows for a geological interpretation of most of Faial’s characteristics. And the interior of the Caldeira is one of the most important nature preservation sites in the Azores. The highest trail in Faial island is also an opportunity to learn about the native flora. Some species are adapte to live on this wind exposed rim.
